Lloyd’s Register’s Virtual Reality Safety Simulator, launched at this year’s Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, Texas, could be used to help shipyards and crew alike improve safety procedures on superyachts.

The software was initially designed to raise awareness about potential on-site safety issues and how these can be avoided in the oil and gas industry, tailoring itself to the complex dangers these sites can bring. For example, the demo video shows how workers could be knocked off equipment and then crushed by falling machinery – enough to make anyone pay attention to health and safety practices!

There is no reason why this technology could not be adapted for the use of the superyacht industry, where the system could be used to familiarise new employees with typical scenarios and emergency procedures. This would enable the workers to undertake tasks as soon as they arrive in the field, reducing countless errors in the long-run.
